Position Summary:

The Adult Peer Support Specialist is a person with lived experience in recovery from mental health and/or substance use challenges who uses that experience to provide hope, support, and encouragement to others. This role helps adults navigate recovery, build wellness strategies, and connect to community-based resources through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide peer support to individuals in recovery through one-on-one meetings, group facilitation, and drop-in support.
• Share personal recovery experiences to promote hope and self-empowerment in others.
• Support individuals in developing recovery goals, wellness plans, and crisis prevention strategies.
• Serve as a positive role model and demonstrate effective coping strategies.
• Assist individuals in identifying and accessing appropriate community services and supports.
• Promote recovery-oriented values such as choice, self-determination, and strength-based care.
• Collaborate with clinical staff, case managers, and other team members to support recovery plans.
• Document services and interactions in accordance with program guidelines and confidentiality laws.
• Attend required trainings, staff meetings, and supervision sessions.

Qualifications:

• Must have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery and a minimum of 12 months of continuous recovery.
• Certified Peer Support Specialist or willingness to complete certification training (state-specific requirement).
• High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
• Strong communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Knowledge of recovery principles and the behavioral health system.
• Basic computer skills and ability to document services electronically.
• Must pass background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience working or volunteering in a peer support or recovery setting, preferred
• Bilingual or multicultural experience is a plus.
• Familiarity with local community resources and support systems.

Working Conditions:

• Work may include travel to various sites, community locations, or client homes.
• Some evening or weekend hours may be required.
