Description
Under general supervision of Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) management, the Animal care Supervisor 1 performs supervisory duties of animal care staff members who perform operational/husbandry duties, facility services/inspections, as well as high-level tasks related to animal health care, the enrichment program, investigator training and services, and/or Biosecurity. The Supervisor prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks following established departmental guidelines, University policies, and federal, state, & local regulations. Develops Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WI) and forms for the functional area; develops, delivers and verifies employee training and assigns workloads; maintains supplies, feed and bedding in stock; monitors room environmental conditions and any other task to assure animal welfare and adherence to the regulations that govern the use of these animals in research as well as personnel safety.
Salary Range: $68,800.00 - $141,000.00
Qualifications
Required:
+ Graduation from high school, completion of training equivalent to the Laboratory Animal
+ Technologist certification of the AALAS, and three years of related animal care experience with demonstrated supervisory ability; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Five (5) years of experience in animal husbandry of USDA covered species and/or exotic species, including non-human primates and swine; or 3 years of experience with these species plus
+ Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level of certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
+ Working knowledge of the standards and guidelines of the 'Guide for the Care and Use of
+ Laboratory Animals', the Animal Welfare Act, and UCLA policies to insure proper and humane animal care as well as employee safety. Specific training on institutional policies may be provided.
+ Ability to effectively communicate with people of varying degrees of veterinary medical training, faculty and staff via various platforms; excellent oral and written skills.
+ Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, peers, and subordinates.
+ Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing agents and their proper application to insure that a clean and healthful environment is maintained.
+ Ability to lift feed bags up to 50 lbs, to handle animals up to 100 lbs, and to push racks up to 300 lbs.
+ Skill in handling a variety of animal species in a variety of situations to prevent injury or distress to the animal or self.
+ Skilled in Computer, Microsoft Office and reading documents written in standard English and skill in using basic English words and phrases to follow the necessary policies and procedures as they apply to laboratory animal medicine.
+ Ability to write and maintain documents (e.g SOPs, working instructions) and provide training to the personnel in the areas.
+ Ability to supervise staff at various levels.
+ Knowledge of medical terminology.
+ Skill in para-veterinary procedures to assist veterinarians and/or researchers, in a variety of species including but not limited to non-human primates and swine.
+ Knowledge of and skill in animal husbandry including employee safety precautions using
+ AALAS manual, federal guidelines, and UCLA policies and procedures.
+ Ability to recognize and describe signs of clinical disease or injury in laboratory mice and rats (where applicable)
+ Ability to effectively handle and restrain rats and mice (where applicable). Required
+ Knowledge of University and DLAM procedures in order to effectively supervise, train, assess, and discipline staff.
+ Knowledge of and ability to follow all SOPs associated with a GLP study, including required study procedures and GLP documentation procedures.
Preferred:
+ Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science or working experience in similar positions and-or academic degrees (AA/AS, BA/BS, MBA, etc.) in related science fields.
