This individual will be responsible for supervising the feeding and care of the animals on the farm, and for the maintenance and development of the facility grounds. They will be accountable for ordering all supplies needed for the farm, and will oversee the design, construction and maintenance of the habitats. The individual will be responsible for supervising Farm tours and will maintain a record of all animals received and adopted. They will be responsible for the cleanliness, appearance and upkeep of all Facility grounds. Work is performed under the general direction of Colonel/Undersheriff.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Minimum of a high school diploma. Experience in Animal Management/Husbandry is preferred.
JOB COMPLEXITY:
Ensures that the Animal Farm meets the specific requirements for an animal exhibitor as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Ensure that the grounds are maintained.
CONSEQUENCE OF ACTIONS:
This individual is directly responsible for the upkeep of the farm grounds, and the health and welfare of all animals located there. Directly responsible for the appearance of the Facility grounds presented to the public and other professionals.
ASSETS:
This position does not have significant control of assets.
WORK CONTROLS:
Work is performed independently under the general direction of the Colonel.
·70% Supervisory duties, care of the animal farm and maintenance of MCSO grounds. Orders all supplies needed for the farm and grounds.
·30% OJT instruction for inmates and farm staff
PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Work involves contact with schools and other agencies in organizing the Animal Farm tours; work also involves contact with members of the community and must development of good working relationships with various shelters and sanctuaries in Florida. Individual will contact a variety of suppliers and contractors.
SAFETY OF OTHERS:
The position is directly responsible for supervising inmate workers assigned to the Farm. Directly responsible for the safety of inmate workers.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The work may involve heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds).
HAZARDS:
Work involves handling animals and various equipment and machinery.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Generally, work is performed outside around the facility and on the Farm; work involves supervising inmates on a regular basis.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
Work involves supervisory authority over Landscaping/Animal Farm Specialist and Animal Farm Assistant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supervise the care and feeding of the farm animals.
Supervise and train Farm/Landscape Assistants
Supervise and train farm inmate workers
Manage day-to-day operations of the farm.
Maintain an animal management program that meets or exceeds USDA standards.
Ensure current licensure and certification.
Oversee design, construction and upgrade/maintenance of corrals, stalls and other habitats.
Maintain hurricane evacuation plan and ensure the animals are cared for before and after the storm.
Count donations and take to Finance for deposit
Maintain and update inmate work schedule, training logs and daily Inmate Worker Log Forms.
Performs related work as required
Oversee landscaping of the Detention Center/HQ property
Maintain Memorial Fountain - schedule service and replacement of equipment as needed – submit invoices
Supervise open house and farm tours to ensure the safety of guests and animals.
Maintain and update social media accounts.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge and experience in handling, feeding and caring for various animals.
Ability to supervise inmates and delegate responsibilities amongst them.
Knowledge of the specific codes set forth by the Department of Agriculture regulating the maintenance and upkeep of an Animal Farm.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida.
