Do you want to help landscape architects advance water, parks, and active transportation infrastructure policies that also address climate change, environmental justice, biodiversity, and other community issues? The government affairs team at the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is looking for a Government Affairs Coordinator to assist with legislation on Capitol Hill and in the state legislatures.

Nature of the Position: Provides administrative and logistical support for the Federal and State Government Affairs teams. Coordinates advocacy efforts that will inform the landscape architecture community and inspire action. Focuses on increasing ASLA members engagement in the political process at the local, state, and federal levels using grassroots advocacy technologies, tools, and strategies.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitors, tracks, researches, and reports on legislative issues and actions for state and federal government affairs initiatives through review of state and federal bills, hearings, testimony, floor debates, and other legislative, regulatory, and communication tools.
  • Prepares, reviews, and edits reporting communications for distribution to multiple internal and external audiences.
  • Coordinates and administers grassroots communications and campaigns on state and federal legislative issues through ASLAs [iAdvocate Network] (VoterVoice), social media, and other grassroots tools.
  • Works directly with ASLA staff and chapters to increase grassroots engagement and facilitate activism of ASLA members.
  • Identifies and implements new trends and strategies in grassroots advocacy.
  • Identifies and executes civic engagement training opportunities for members and chapters.
  • Runs reports, updates spreadsheets, and maintains and updates precise records on ASLAs advocacy engagement and develops progress reportsincluding message analytics and grassroots data.
  • Administers government affairs web pages to ensure timely, accurate information in coordination with ASLAs Communications Department.
  • Assists in meeting management including developing and preparing materials, sending invitations, coordinating logistics, and other associated tasks for events such as conference calls, webinars, Advocacy Day, Advocacy Summit, and ASLA Annual and Mid-year meetings.
  • Assists with special projects as required.
  • Participates in ASLA-related activities, and events including governance meetings, the annual conference, and summits which may require limited travel.
  • Upholds the ASLA values and culture. Adheres to the ASLA policy on Standards and Conduct and all other administrative and management policies.
  • Performs related other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • BA or BS degree
  • At least two to three (2-3) years of related experience in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of state and federal government processes
  • Demonstrated experience supporting successful online advocacy campaigns for online audiences and policy makers.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills. Proven ability to frame and draft cogent written messages, including persuasive messages for advocacy campaigns.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, work calmly under tight deadlines, juggle multiple tasks, organize time effectively, conduct research, and identify resources for projects.
  • Knowledge of professional licensure, climate change, active transportation, nature-based solutions, parks and recreation issues is useful.
  • Self-disciplined to meet deadlines and have a strong work ethic.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, grassroots management systems (i.e. VoterVoice) and content management systems (CMS).
**ASLA operates on a hybrid schedule with 2 days in the DC office (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
