Job Description
The Scribe Medical Assistant supports providers by accurately documenting patient encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) while also assisting with basic clinical and administrative duties. This role helps improve provider efficiency, patient flow, and documentation accuracy while ensuring high-quality patient care and compliance with clinical standards.
Medical Scribing Duties - Accurately document patient encounters in real time during provider visits
- Enter histories, review of systems, physical exam findings, assessments, and plans into the EMR
- Update patient charts with test results, orders, and follow-up instructions as directed by the provider
- Ensure all documentation is complete, timely, and compliant with clinical and regulatory standards
- Assist providers with chart preparation before visits and closing charts after visits
Clinical Support Duties - Room patients and obtain vital signs
- Prepare exam rooms and assist with patient flow
- Perform basic clinical tasks within scope of training and certification
- Assist providers during procedures as needed
- Ensure infection control and safety protocols are followed
Administrative & Communication Duties - Communicate effectively with providers, clinical staff, and patients
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations
- Assist with referrals, forms, and documentation as needed
- Support front office or back office tasks when required
Competencies - Familiarity with transcription devices
- Familiarity with medical terminology
- Strong attention to detail
- Demonstrate initiative, insight, and judgement in decision-making process
Infection Control Category This job is designated as a Category I job using OSHA definitions. This means there are tasks that involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.
Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment This job operates in a professional medical clinic environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job and include (but are not limited to): the ability to stand/walk for up to twelve (12) hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers; assist patients in and out of wheelchairs; push wheelchairs; the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
Travel This position may require some travel.
Educational Requirements - Bachelor's Degree preferred
- High School Diploma, or equivalent, or experience in medically relevant field is required
- BLS certification is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire
- Previous experience in medical transcription or other related fields
