Miami Children's Museum is looking for a new Museum Lead VPK Teacher to join their team!

Miami Children’s Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution, which meets the needs of all children in our multicultural community. The Museum offers interactive exhibits, programs and learning materials related to arts, culture and our community. Miami Children’s Museum encourages visitors of all ages to play, learn, imagine and create together.

The Museum Lead VPK Teacher is responsible for the general supervision and management of a class of 3-5 year old children. The Museum Lead VPK Teacher is responsible for the planning and execution of all the activities to include project-based learning, museum experiences, the development of rituals and routines, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for safety and health giving first and foremost consideration to the wellbeing and safety of the children both indoors and outdoors as well as assisting children with toileting and other personal matters. Comforts children who are hurt or distressed. Attends to sick children and those in need of first aide.
  • Develops lesson plan that correspond to the Reggio Emilia approach and Museum learning for weekly submission.
  • Provides a daily schedule with a balance between quiet and active activities as well as between child-initiated and adult–initiated activities.
  • Plans activities daily that are developmentally appropriate to each age and child thereby fostering exploration, investigation and creativity using a variety of materials and equipment as well as the galleries in the Miami Children’s Museum that develop self-expression and an interest in learning. Encourages children to question and explore the world in which they live.
  • Monitors each child's growth, development, and behavior. Keeps records and reports findings to the Early Childhood Director and families using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ & ASQ-SE). Identifies signs of developmental issues, health concerns, or emotional distress.
  • Administers and prepares children for the FAST STAR Early Literacy Assessment.
  • Extends appropriate language development and self-confidence through storytelling, drama, music, and conversations.
  • Extends development of science, mathematics, and social studies through experiments, problem-solving, exploration, classroom materials and museum gallery events that encourage children to think reason and question.
  • Portrays positive attitudes with children in resolving conflicts, identifying feelings, describing problems, negotiating differences, and generating solutions. Teachers encourage cooperation and redirecting unacceptable behavior as well as using positive approaches to help children deal with anger and frustration.
  • Committed to the concept of teamwork, sharing of ideas, materials, and services. Works in a professional manner with peers, supervisors, and assistants. Offers guidance in positive ways.
  • Willing to share responsibilities and assume other tasks in emergencies.
  • In-service course work, a minimum of 30 hours yearly that reinforces the proponents of best practices for early care and education.
  • Supports the goals, objectives, and philosophy of the preschool. Adheres to policies and procedures in the Early Childhood Institute’s Staff Handbook and The Miami Children’s Museum’s Employee Handbook
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Museum Studies, or related field
  • The Department of Children and Families 45-hours
  • VPK Instructor Emergent Literacy Course
  • Pediatric First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, families, and staff
