Exceptional Opportunity for Epilepsy-focused Pediatric Neurosurgeon with Prestigious Children’s Hospital in Miami

Nicklaus Children's Hospital, a 325-bed freestanding children's hospital and ACS-verified Level 1 pediatric trauma center, and Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists, the physician multispecialty group practice of Nicklaus Children's Health System, are seeking a fellowship-trained BC/BE pediatric neurosurgeon focused on epilepsy surgery with expertise in both open and minimally invasive techniques and at least three years of experience. Founded in 2001, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Brain Institute is the nation’s first comprehensive medical program dedicated solely to the care of the developing brain. It brings together world-renowned specialists in numerous pediatric neuroscience subspecialties, including child neurologists dedicated solely to pediatric neurological care, with unparalleled cumulative clinical experience. The team fosters integrated research and offers the latest in assessment and treatment for children with disorders of the brain, spinal cord, muscles and peripheral nerves. Since 2008, the hospital has been ranked among the nation’s top-tier programs by U.S. News & World Report and is recognized as 22 nd in the nation and highest ranked in Florida for pediatric neurology and neurosurgery in the 2024-25 listing. The Section of Neurosurgery is led by chief Dr. Toba Niazi, who also serves as co-medical director of the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute and medical director of Neuro-Oncology Surgical Services.

 

In October 2024, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital celebrated the opening of the Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower, one of the most innovative pediatric surgical facilities in the United States. The five-story, 131,000 square-foot facility is equipped with 12 advanced and fully integrated operating suites used to perform even the most complex pediatric surgeries. Operating suites feature the latest surgical technology including lighting features that allow for adjustments based on surgical procedures, sterilization by integrated UV lighting, as well as rapid, precise hypothermic changing technology to warm or cool a patient’s temperature quickly when needed. The facility is also equipped with the Medtronic O-arm ® StealthStation S8® Surgical System for Neurosurgery, Spine Smart Dose, the Zeiss ® microscope robotic visualization system and the Rosa robotic system for minimally invasive surgery. The Brain Institute has access to Curry Neuroimaging Suite with dedicated PhD support alongside our epileptologists. Job Summary

The position is primarily a clinical position related to the diagnosis, treatment and clinical management of pediatric patients in a multidisciplinary environment that includes physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, clinical scientists and social workers. The position offers exposure to a mix of general and high acuity pediatric patients. The position also includes teaching and supervision of medical residents and provides opportunities to participate in research and publishing.

Job Specific Duties

  • Applies knowledge of growth and development in customer interactions and treatment.
  • Continues to actively self-educate (i.e., reading journals, CME credits, NCH conferences, etc.).
  • Coordinates and/or develops and delivers monthly inservices to meet staff and resident development needs.
  • Coordinates follow-up of tests, lab studies, and patient follow-up phone calls.
  • Directly provides clinical services to patients including, but not limited to: performing and recording history and physical examinations, recording and interpreting pertinent patient data, developing and documenting a treatment plan, writing routine orders for appropriate laboratory studies, x-rays and consultations, performing patient/parent teaching, assisting with patient follow-up, performing appropriate screenings, administering medications as required, ordering and/or performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as indicated by patient findings.
  • Makes suggestions to Department Director and/or attending staff that may be beneficial to the improvement of the department.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement, Research and Publishing.
  • Participates in teaching of and is role model to medical students and residents.
  • Participates in the call schedule as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from an accredited medical school 
  • Current state medical license and in good standing with medical board
  • American Heart Association BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families and co-workers.
