The Newborn Screening Section Manager is responsible for administering and directing the Newborn Screening (NBS) program at the Public Health Laboratory. In collaboration with the Division Director, the NBS Manager develops and implements section procedures and controls. This position requires effective communication and close coordination with a variety of internal and external partners to remain aware of new project development or modification and to develop solutions to technical problems. This position will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment of all, with respect to diversity and equity.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of professional laboratory experience overseeing a newborn screening program.
Two years of experience must include managerial/supervisory experience in a laboratory or related programmatic setting.
Previous experience below is required to be considered a candidate and will be assessed during the interview process: - Experience with lab quality improvement and quality assurance.
- Experience utilizing lab best practices and principals.
- Experience with method development and method validation in laboratory sciences.
- Strategic planning experience including budget management.
- Communication to internal and external stakeholders based on results, findings, and project development.
- A high level of knowledge and expertise in administrative management, clinical laboratory science, population-based screening science and follow-up activities, and research methodology.
A Bachelor's degree in microbiology, chemistry, public health, laboratory science, genetics, or related science field may substitute for 1 year of experience; a Masters for 18 months; a PhD for 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications - Extensive training in a Newborn Screening laboratory program and/or in a public health setting.
- Ability to provide oversight to ensure the establishment and revision of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the requirements of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA); State of Minnesota; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and prepare required compliance reports.
- Experience with the implementation of technological advancements including laboratory testing, examination of clinical specimens for newborn screening testing, and follow-up activities.
- Expertise in method development and validation.
- Experience with implementation of analytical testing methods and programmatic data dissemination and follow up activities with clinical partners.
- Technical competency with the relevant IT programs and practices associated with Newborn Screening laboratory testing, Point of Care screening, and follow-up actives, as well as oversight of implementation of computer and software solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to provide training for other laboratory program employees, students, or other trainees, to support a collaborative team environment.
