Classification Description Summary

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of park janitorial and grounds maintenance on City parks and related facilities; assists in the most routine park maintenance functions including restroom and shelter cleaning, trash removal, and basic landscaping and grounds maintenance; and operates a variety of hand-held parks maintenance tools and equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Parks Maintenance Worker I is an entry level and trainee class within the Parks Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class perform a range of parks maintenance duties under direct supervision as assigned. This class is distinguished from other classifications in the series in that the incumbents receive continual training while gaining on the job experience.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Clean and maintain facilities, restrooms and shelters; check and replenish tissue, towels and soap; gather and remove garbage and litter from grounds and facilities, including parking lots, curbs and gutters.

Perform a variety of basic grounds maintenance functions on City parks and related facilities including trimming, edging, weed removal, graffiti removal and grounds keeping duties.

Perform routine, manual duties such as assisting with turf maintenance and repair of sprinkler heads and drip irrigation emitters; raking leaves, limbs and brush.

Operate light duty grounds equipment including push mowers, gas powered: trimmers, edgers, blowers and snow removal equipment.

Participate in planting and maintaining flower beds; prune and trim hedges, flowers and shrubs.

Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Operations, services, and activities of a parks maintenance program.

Methods and techniques of grounds keeping, landscaping, and turf maintenance.

Operational characteristics of a variety of light vehicles.

Operational characteristics of a variety of maintenance and grounds equipment and tools.

Basic plant species terms.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.

Ability to:

Perform a variety of outdoor janitorial and grounds keeping functions.

Methods and techniques of grounds keeping.

Operate a variety of light duty equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Apply pesticides according to federal and state laws and protocols.

Participate in routine janitorial and grounds keeping functions.

Learn common practices, methods and materials used in horticultural and turf maintenance activities.

Learn common practices, methods and materials for minor repair of irrigation sprinklers, drip emitters and lateral lines.

Learn the proper method of spraying various pesticides and herbicides related to park maintenance.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations.

Work in a team based environment to achieve common goals.

Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

One year of paid manual work in an outdoor environment, including six months of janitorial and grounds keeping or park maintenance experience.

License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license.
