The Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) is inviting candidates with an interest in technology commercialization to apply for an opportunity to join a one-year paid fellowship program called The Next-Gen Innovators Program (“The Next-Gen Innovators”). The OTT is the office that is charged with protecting and licensing innovations developed at Penn State. The Next-Gen Innovators Program will provide a comprehensive hands-on approach to developing the next generation of leaders in technology commercialization. The program spans one year, providing trainees with long-term exposure to technology commercialization processes. Participants will rotate through at least three key placements: The Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) to gain direct experience in technology assessment processes, patenting procedures, and licensing strategies; a Venture Capital (VC) Firm to learn about venture investment decision-making; and a Startup Company to gain operational experience and understand how technologies are brought to market. Fellows will dedicate 4 months with OTT, then 4 months with Ben Franklin (a technology-based economic development and venture investment organization in State College), followed by a placement with a technology-based startup company. The program is 20 hours per week for approximately 48 weeks, with an additional 2 weeks of rotation with a university relation department of a venture capital firm in the Philadelphia area. Compensation is $15/hour. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in a technical field preferred, backgrounds in life sciences, physical sciences, law, and/or business are ideal, and graduate students interested in technology transfer are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have excellent communication and technical writing skills, be dedicated, dependable, highly organized, self-motivated, and have excellent time-management skills. Position may require up to 10% travel. Responsibilities include hands-on learning in real-world settings, leadership development to drive innovation and bridge gaps between academia, business, and investment, and fostering new entrepreneurs equipped to lead in technology commercialization. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter explaining their interest and qualifications. Penn State is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability. Employment requires successful background checks.
