This position is eligible for Mid Atlantic Retina's $1,000 Hiring Incentive! The hired candidate will receive $500 after successful completion of 90 days of employment and $500 after successful completion of 1 year of employment! Job Description

The Insurance Verification Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring patients have accurate and up-to-date insurance coverage prior to receiving services. This position is responsible for contacting patients to confirm insurance details, verifying benefits, and enrolling eligible patients in copay assistance programs.

Essential Functions

  1. Call patients to confirm insurance coverage prior to scheduled appointments or procedures.
  2. Collect and update insurance information in the patient management system.
  3. Verify patient benefits including coverage limits, copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket responsibilities.
  4. Contact insurance carriers directly or use online portals to obtain benefit details.
  5. Identify patients eligible for copay assistance programs.
  6. Guide patients through the enrollment process and ensure all required documentation is submitted.
  7. Maintain accurate records of copay assistance approvals and renewals.
  8. Document all verification and enrollment activities in Nextech.
  9. Communicate benefit details and financial responsibilities to patients clearly and compassionately.
  10. Collaborate with billing, front desk, and clinical teams to ensure seamless patient experience.
  11. Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
  12. Travels as needed.

  1. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing may be required. This would require the ability to occasionally lift files, bend, stoop, crouch, reach, and stand on a stool as necessary.
  2. Ability to lift or move up to 15 pounds at times.
  3. Work with data by calculating and manipulating numbers, processing data on a computer, classifying, recording, storing and retrieving information.
  4. Use words to communicate ideas, read with comprehension and explain abstract or complex ideas in more basic terms.
  5. The employee will use hands to operate equipment such as a computer mouse, show manual or finger dexterity, handle things with precision or speed, use muscular coordination and physical stamina.
  6. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate verbally one to one, in front of groups, over the telephone and by email.
  7. This position requires listening to verbal communication using a telephone or with a headset and processing the information while entering the data into a computer system, processing auditory information and responding verbally back in an appropriate manner.
  8. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus with or without corrective lenses.
  9. Ability to follow through on plans or instructions.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in insurance verification, medical billing, or patient financial services.
  • Strong understanding of commercial and government insurance plans.
  • Familiarity with copay assistance programs and patient support services.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in EHR/PM systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in specialty care or high-volume outpatient settings.
  • Ability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality and professionalism.
